Emergency Shelter

In addition to the Youth Emergency Housing Program, Cyrus Centre is currently operating a Temporary Shelter Program for youth aged 19-24. Youths can expect a similar experience to that of our primary shelter.

Cyrus Centre provides emergency shelter for youth aged 12-18. Our shelters include semi-private rooms and access to a variety of different services and supports. We operate emergency shelters at both our Chilliwack and Abbotsford centres. Our shelters are open from 8:00 pm – 8:00 am, 365 days a year.  To meet the eligibility to reside in YEHP youth must show a housing need (no other safe option) and that it is safe for them and for others to stay at Cyrus Centre (staff will ask non-invasive questions about their mental health and substance use). YEHP is a temporary place for youth to stay while they are working alongside staff towards an alternative stable housing option.

When the shelters open at 8:00 pm the centre is only accessible to residents (ie. the drop-in centre closes). Staff will perform mandatory belonging checks before youth will have access to their rooms. Between 8:00 pm and 10:00 pm youth can shower, do laundry, eat, watch tv, read, play games, and simply hang out. Staff is there around the clock to connect, support, and serve.

There is a mandatory bedtime of 11:00 pm and youth are asked to be up by 8:00 am (or sooner if they need to be at school or work). Breakfast is served daily. Bedrooms are not accessible during the day but each youth is given a secure locker in the resource room which they have access to throughout the day.

On the first morning, youth will meet with the Youth and Family Case Manager who will walk alongside each youth, individually, to connect them with appropriate services, and support them in a plan for long-term stability.
