From Homelessness to Hope: Beth and Michael’s Journey with Cyrus Centre

For Beth, her connection with Cyrus Centre began at 16, during one of the most tumultuous times in her life. After being left at the Centre by her father, she was scared and overwhelmed. But what she found was something entirely unexpected: a compassionate and welcoming space where the staff made sure she felt safe and valued.

“They explained every step, and it was so reassuring,” Beth recalls.

Years later, in 2021, Beth returned to Cyrus Centre with her partner, Michael, after unforeseen circumstances left them homeless. Michael, who was fiercely protective of Beth, recalls how the staff’s dedication to creating a calm, supportive environment made all the difference. “They helped her feel safe when things were too intimidating,” he says.

With the unwavering support of staff like Amber, who offered not just solutions but understanding and presence, Beth and Michael were able to transition out of homelessness. Today, they’ve built a stable life, complete with a two-bedroom apartment and the mental health support they both needed to heal and grow.

“Cyrus Centre gave us more than shelter—they gave us hope,” Beth shares. “That’s one of the biggest impacts they’ve had—getting us out of homelessness, obviously, since that’s the antithesis of being homeless. They did it so quickly too. I think we were here for about two and a half to three months. It was such a painless process in comparison to what we thought it was going to be.”

Her advice to others in similar situations? “Keep taking steps, even small ones, and don’t give up on your goals.”

For Michael, finding a counselor through Cyrus Centre was life changing. “It’s okay for men to seek help. Unpacking what you’re carrying is exhausting, but it’s worth it,” he says.

Beth and Michael’s story is a reminder of the incredible transformations that can happen when compassion and persistence intersect. At Cyrus Centre, every small act of care—from providing shelter to sitting with someone in their pain—can help rewrite the story of a life.
